Home & Search Paths

resonon config paths prints every directory below as this machine resolves it, in order, with where each came from and whether it exists. The editor resolves through the same list.

Everything resonon stores per user lives under ~/.resonon. RESONON_HOME relocates the whole directory; see Environment Variables for what it accepts.

PathWhat it holds
~/.resonon/preferences.tomlThis machine’s preferences.
~/.resonon/bin/The launcher resonon and resonon-lsp lead to.
~/.resonon/versions/Installed resonon versions.
~/.resonon/versions/defaultThe version that runs where no project pins one.
~/.resonon/versions/<v>/kits/The kits that ship with a version.
~/.resonon/kits/Your own sampler kit library.
~/.resonon/scales/Your own Scala (.scl) tunings.
~/.resonon/plugins/Embedded CLAP plugins cache.
~/.resonon/cache/clap-cache.jsonCLAP plugin database.
~/.resonon/cache/vst3-cache.jsonVST3 plugin database.

The plugin database carries a format version. One written by a different resonon version is discarded and rebuilt, so the first sweep after upgrading opens every bundle again.

Searched in this order; the first match wins. A folder you name is searched in addition to the built-in ones, never instead of them.

OrderWhereModulesKits
1The project./lib, ./dependencies./kits, then ./lib/*/kits and ./dependencies/*/kits
2This machine—every [folders] kits entry, in file order
3The resonon home—the kits shipped with this version, then ~/.resonon/kits
  • Project directories are relative to the project root, the nearest directory above the importing file with a resonon.toml.
  • There is no machine-wide module path. A module is reachable through this project’s dependencies/ or lib/, or by a relative or absolute path in the use. See Modules.
  • A package’s kits are searched wherever the package is: Kit("808") finds a declared package’s kit as Kit("drum-kits/808") does. Qualify the name when two packages ship a kit of the same name.
  • A Scala file named without a path ("werckmeister", .scl added when missing) is looked for next to the .non file that names it, then in the project’s scales/, ~/.resonon/scales/, and the scales/ next to the resonon binary.
  • Sample files are not searched for. Sample("kick.wav") is a path, relative to the .non file that names it, or absolute.
  • The standard library ships with each version and is found automatically. RESONON_STDLIB_PATH replaces it.

CLAP and VST3 plugins are looked for in all of these, both formats in each:

  • the standard plugin folders for your OS;
  • CLAP_PATH and VST3_PATH, the variables the CLAP and VST3 specifications define;
  • every [folders] plugins entry in preferences.
